The Linux "High Priest” Eric Raymond Makes News

On the last day of Linux World SF, The Register ran a story titled Open source guru advocates ideological shift in which Eric Raymond makes some wild assertions. I have waited a few days in the hope that Eric’s blog would including details that backed up the sound bites:

Raymond said the community is not moving fast enough to engage with non-technical users whose first-choice platform is either an iPod, MP3player or Microsoft desktop running Windows Media Player.

“The end of the 64-bit transition happens at the end of 2008. After that the operating system gets locked in for the next 30 years.”

Unfortunately no details have surfaced on Eric’s blog or elsewhere.

I know of nothing that supports the later assertion. Like Jeremy Garcia, I think 32-bit to 64-bit will be like any other upgrade for people and be a non-event. Now is not the last chance to disrupt the Microsoft empire for 30 years.

Regarding “moving fast enough”, I am eager for the details that support Eric’s assertions. Eric?

Generally speaking, anything is true.
