Or so they all tell me. Does it really ever take 10 days?
A big part of my strategy against my tech frustration is simplification. One of the things I’m doing is removing myself from mailing lists. Unsubscribing from a VMware marketing email list, the response email was:
We are writing to confirm that you have chosen to opt-out of receiving all marketing information from VMware. Please allow 10 business days for this change to take effect. You might receive email communication from VMware during this time as we update our database.
What is so broken about their databases that it could take 10 business days for VMware to update their database?!
Although, I imagine it is some default form response, as I get similar response emails from other services, and I don’t expect to receive any emails, it does make me wonder.
In the sea of similar brainless responses, turning it around they might have even created a small opportunity:
We are writing to confirm that you have chosen to opt-out of receiving all marketing information from VMware. Powered by the very same enterprise virtualization solutions we sell, we have immediately updated our database. You will not receive any more email communication from VMware.

Not that I want to defend these guys, but I’ve worked with companies who farmed out their email marketing to third parties. They sent an updated database to those third parties every X days, the vendor would restore it, do a sync, etc. It can be pretty ghetto-duct-tape-y.
I used to wonder the same thing about online bill payments - “please make your payment at least two days prior to when the bill is due” to ensure you don’t get any late payment charges. Huh?! I used to worry about these things, but now I just brush it off as a CYA (cover your ass) type of deal.
Oh Brent, that is going to give me nightmares…. scenes from Brazil flash through my mind.
Kevin, don’t get me started with banks… but here what is the risk of not CYA? Pretty small if not notta
I feel your pain on this one. In some cases like ebay, I can’t seem to unsubscribe the correct way because I still get random email from them all the time.
I’m the same as dutch, the number of times I’ve tried to unsubscribe to something and got an error… they must do it on purpose.
That stinks. They should be able to take you off immediately. Just brush it off life is messy and inconvenient most of the time
