http://http:// & Microsoft.com

http://http:// is redirected to Microsoft. I have stumbled upon this once before, but did not have time to reflect on it.

URLs from http://http through http://http:// to http://http://www.flock.com/home/about/ will lead you to Microsoft.

It is not like I am using MS Internet Explorer right now. Here, I am using Firefox 1.0.6 on Ubuntu Linux. Do you think it is a bug in Firefox?

This is problematic because many tools, including WordPress, pre-populate a dialog or form for a URL with http://, so when I am pasting a URL, I may accidentally not overwrite the existing http://. This results in a link like http://http://www.flock.com/home/about/ which hideously is redirected Microsoft.

  1. Thanks Greg for the insights!

The “malformed URL case” seems like a very minor bug to me. My search for such a bug @ bugzilla.moz found a few bugs, and appears to be first described by URL guessing overguesses. I created some a relationships with another bug, “keyword feature shouldn’t trigger if “http://” was included”.

It is ironic that a # of mismatched bugs demonstrated http://http://....

Provide UI for configuring/disabling keyword.URL functionality is interesting as it describes some inner workings of the relevant functionality. internet-keywords also seems relevant.

I wonder if URI fixup happens after “open link in new window” as if the address was typed by hand still repros (in trunk/head). ?

I want to confirm some of these things in trunk/head, before I update any of these bugs with my opinions.

Thank you Greg for perking my interest further.
