Yesterday was my last day with Flock Inc.
I care deeply about the people of Flock and I continue to be excited by what Flock is doing and its potential to be a great success.
One of my favorite parts of my Flock experience has been collaborating with volunteers from around the world.
Some people were hopeful that the news that Flock is opening a Victoria office would mean that I would stay, because I previously suggested that there was not a great fit for me to work remotely from Victoria. I think if the timing was different, I would have stayed on, but Flock has already stopped being heaps of fun for me, and less than fantastic energy is not good for me or Flock.
Why was it less than heaps of fun? It is hard to put a finger on it. Both Flock and I have grown tremendously in this last year. Some of the people that I enjoy working with the most moved on (Chris, Vera, Bart, Eli) or their role changed (Anthony, Termie) resulting in me having less opportunity to work with them.
What I call Flock’s Kryptonite really bothers me. I did not feel I had the resources to address the issues that I felt were important. That is not unusual in a start up, but my priorities and Mark’s for the organization outside of software development were quite different. Mark has crystal clear vision for engineering — an absolutely fantastic engineering leader. I stopped feeling empowered.
I feel bad walking away from Flock “unfinished”, but nothing really ever is finished and I am very confident in the team that continues to move it forward. Don’t expect me to stop writing about Flock and submitting the bugs I find, but consciously I am detaching myself greatly from Flock to focus on my new gig and other projects I am most passionate about.
I feel it is appropriate for me to file a Flock bug in this post so, please update your about page Flock.
It has been wonderful learning and growing with you all. I don’t like good byes, so I will leave it at:
To all of Flock’s contributors, good bye for now.

Lloyd, sorry to hear that you’re moving on. I appreciate the support that you gave volunteers from around the world, like me, for Flock QA.
Those are some great photos. They wouldn’t have passed a QA smoketest though… each photo link posting to foolswisdom.com/photos/blah rather than to flickr.com/photos/blah. If each photo link is a defect, that’s… a lot of bugs.
Hi Vance,
I appreciate the opportunity to have collaborated with you! And look forward to at the very least staying in touch, if not collaborating more.
Thank you for discovering the link URL domain issue, and will a little vi magic I have corrected it. Classic lesson, after overcoming other issues with including so many photos in this post, in my relief I did not recheck that last part.
Thank you again,
Lloyd
Hot damn that’s a lot of pictures. Enjoy your next gig Lloyd.
Thanks Paul!
It just felt right taking them. The photo uploader and photo bar also needed a lot of testing back in the day
Going to miss working with you Lloyd, but hopefully will see you outside the office
