Flock by core mozilla developers and Flock Inc biz plan is running Google ads

Flock Browser

If something sounds unlikely it probably is.
If someone is not being quoted, they probably did not say it.

With so many tools to record information, I would expect journalism to be more accurate. Chris told me a horror story recently. It seems that citizen journalists are more responsive to correcting information, even if they may be a little more likely to get things wrong the first time around. I am not writing this post as damage control. I am writing this post so I can link to it when I find one of these misconceptions on the Internet, to provide one more place where slightly accurate information can be found ;-) and because I am waiting for Flock to build.

What of the following is true about Flock :

Mozilla Firefox browser — which Decrem and some of his engineers helped create and popularize before starting Flock last spring

So, back to that roster… in the starting line up, we’ve got:

About the Flock Team

I do not see any of those people in the Firefox credits, nor in any other Mozilla application’s credits, nor do I see them suggesting they were Firefox “creators” anywhere.

Bart did lead the Firefox 1.0 launch and was intimately involved with all things Mozilla before he left to form Round Two, which turned into Flock. I was personally involved (with Bart and others) as an admin of the Spread Firefox campaign, so I also have Mozilla heritage. Another Flock developer, Ian, was working on the portable browser for Sidekick, which was based on Mozilla.

Daryl was also involved with Spread Firefox, and I was involved with Netscape 8.0. Anthony has also been working with on Firefox extensions and the code base for over six months now.

What of the following are likely or true about Flock Inc’s business plan:

Decrem expects to make money from running Google ads

I do not see Google ads fitting directly into our own offering, but what do I know, I try to stay out of the biz stuff as long as it does not interfere with the user experience. We are negotiating with the all major search providers (Yahoo, Google, etc) and other partners to finance our browser development. We are already working with leading partners in many of the specialized social software spaces! We are trying to be the medium for connecting all of these awesome emerging services.

We are not expecting to make money running Google ads, we are not adware, we don’t like ads, I don’t like ads.

Yup, you missed the obvious. There is a very straightforward business model for a web browser that doesn’t sell out the user experience: that simple search box in the upper right corner. Mozilla folks have talked publicly about their search monetization deals, a simple Technorati search will show you rumors about how much money is involved, and Opera just went free thanks to their new search deal with Google. That’s just one example. We believe that there are any number of other ways where a browser provider can offer valuable services to its users and pay the bills while always putting the user experience first.

So the bottom line is: if a browser vendor does a great job offering a better user experience and is able to earn the trust of its users, then there’s a solid, simple business model.

As for whether there’s lasting value here, let’s let the market decide that. Certainly we’re not the only company that is building on open source and actively contributing back to the open source community, so I don’t quite follow your logic.
