Flock beta 1 means?

About three weeks ago we released Flock beta 1. Some friends have asked me what “Flock beta 1″ means.

flock-cereal-box.jpg Beta 1? This means that we have created a release with features that we think are of a usefulness and quality that Flock is usable on a daily basis, but we will not be surprised if it crashes or otherwise behaves poorly.

We are using the modern, web application meaning of beta, as opposed to what was previously used in client/server applications and still used within a development cycle. The other meaning of beta software is having finished the functionality and the most severe bugs, but not having the polish to be used daily.

I am comfortable with the risks to recommend Flock to everyone for daily use. The history and live search make it the best browser I have used. I consider Flock an essential tool for anyone interested in photo sharing with Flickr and Photobucket.

Still there are risks, and I appreciate people’s willingness to help us make a great product. I enjoy the opportunity to identify and help fix the worse and most prevalent problems experienced.

I look forward to a beta 2 around September creating additional experiences and improving the existing functionality. Flock’s novel features are building blocks for a rich, complete experience.

Before the end of the year, we hope to have taken these building blocks and have an experience with polish.
