Exploratory Testing needed for Flock’s integration of Photobucket

Exploratory Testing needed for Flock’s integration of Photobucket. Download a Flock 0.5.13.1 "release candidate, continuous testing build" — wow, that is a mouth full. If there are no new severe problems reported, we will likely release Flock 0.5.13 sometime tomorrow with this feature.

Flock, led by Geoffrey, and developers Peter, Raj, and Anthony have been working with the fantastic Photobucket team. Photobucket needs no introduction — my guess is that they are by far the most popular web photo hosting service, at least in North America.

You may now choose to use Photobucket with the Photo Browser and Photo Uploader topbars.  Switching photo services requires Flock to be restarted. To do this:

  1. Go to Flock’s Preferences
  2. Click on Web Services
  3. Click on the Photo Sharing tab
  4. Select Photobucket from the dropdown. You’ll be prompted to do this after making your selection.

Photobucket does not support contacts or tags. After switching, the browse and upload photos interfaces will reflect Photobucket’s particular feature set.

In terms of testing, Peter and Raj seem to have done a thorough job before handing it over to testing. I have tested the features, and the issues that I identified have been resolved, or deferred.

The outstanding issue that won’t be addressed in this release is:

  • Multibyte characters in Photobucket description field mangled on upload (bug).

Why exactly does Flock have to be restarted when photo services are switched? Is there a way for us to get around that? Does it just have to do with clearing authentication to the service or something? This seems like really really bad user experience. :( Luckily, I suppose it’s not something people do very frequently.

Yeah, i agree with daryl, there needs to be a way for it to be set up without having to restart. When i get home today ill test it and get some complaints filed on bugzilla ;-)

Oh, and I haven’t tried photobucket yet, but it’s good to see you’re already branching out with the photo options. Keep up the good work!

People! They always come back asking for more ;-) Seriously, for a minor release allowing switching without restarting Flock — or maybe there is a better solution that allows both multiple services to be run concurrently — , the point is it was too big of a stability risk and quality risk.

I know the team is working on a better design for the next major release.

Give me a couple of days to get my life in order (gotta choose between making money at an internship or doing restoration/demolition volunteer work in New Orleans over the summer) and settled in, and I’m back on the testing/bug boat. I’m glad that new photo services are being worked in. That will be a very strong selling point for some of the people I know.
