WordPress 2.3 Beta!

The final month of WordPress 2.3 development is upon us! Download the first beta of 2.3!

The vacations are over!

When Ryan was away for a couple of weeks, I knew it! The WordPress noticeably changes when Ryan, Robin or Mark are away.

Matt, Bas, Peter, and Jeremy kept things tidy and moving along, and this past couple of weeks things have really accelerated as we approached the final month of development.

I’m really enjoying the new features of WordPress 2.3!

Like other members of the development team, I am running the beta on my main blog, but if you don’t eat and sleep WordPress development, install it in your testing environment (any PC will do), and participate in making WordPress 2.3 the best!

Matt describes it correctly as:

Still very rough, so only test the beta if you are comfortable troubleshooting PHP issues, filing tickets, and backing up your data religiously. If you’re interested you can join the wp-testers mailing list and download the beta here.

Ryan provides some great tidbits on the state of things for this first beta.

On Friday, Ryan followed up a similar email to wp-hackers with WordPress 2.3 Release Timeline:

WordPress 2.3 went into feature freeze last night in preparation for its eventual release on September 24th. From now on we’re concentrating exclusively on testing and bug fixing. We are scheduled to release the first public beta of 2.3 this coming Monday, August 27th. We’ll be doing a new beta release every Monday and bug hunts every Wednesday. On September 17th we enter a hard freeze and release the first release candidate. A calendar of these events is available here.

I’m really excited about us all coming together hunting down the bugs! See you Wednesday!

On WordPress.com’s 2nd Birthday Matt wrote:

When WordPress.com launched there was a lot of worry that it would suffocate its open source cousin, but the opposite has happened: it’s introduced a whole new audience to WP and WordPress.org is nearing its third major release in a year, a much faster and more mature development cycle than it’s ever had before.

Our fears were unfounded!

Although, I will save my detailed post till after it’s released on who stands out in my mind as making WordPress 2.3 awesome, in the year that I have dedicated myself to WordPress1 this release I have seen the most significant and most diverse contributions on this maturing product.

Significant work has been done this last couple of weeks as the feature freeze approached!2 Including:

  • WordPress and plugin updates notification
  • SEO-friendly URL redirection, canonicalize more URLs
  • jQuery updated to 1.1.4
  • And finally upgrade updated to use taxonomy — tags are here!

What have you been looking forward to? How are you testing WordPress 2.3 beta?

  1. It was near the beginning of August last year I started working part-time on WordPress, and full-time by mid-September as my transition from Flock was complete. []
  2. Each cycle gets better, and we are still working towards an ideal ~2:1:1 develop:fix:beta []
