43 People Blog Post

Trying 43 People’s ability to post to my blog and writing about a most excellent person who I met in passing.

Who introduced me to Danny Dawson

Danny, aka quasistoic, commented on a flickr photo of mine. I looked up his website, and saw that he was a most excellent person. I then saw that he was planning on going to Laughing Squid 10th Anniversary Party . I did not seem him there, so I sent him a Flickr msg.

He responded saying that he did not make it. We both figured that we would bump into each other sooner than later.

Last weekend, I ran into him at Courtney and Jason’s house warming party. I did not recognize him, but I recognized the lovely lady sitting beside him, Claudine from Kris Krug and her account of their encounter. Then Danny said “are you Lloyd Budd” and the circle was closed.

The internet can be like a puzzle. There is a picture of Danny’s tat on 43 People. That same picture appears as graffiti in some of his Flickr photos.
The simplest conclusion is that the symbol is his personal symbol and he would therefore be responsible for the grafitti. (I personally think graffiti is visually interesting, but wrong as a violation of other’s property)
Other conclusions could be that: the symbol is his personal symbol and other people are responsible for the grafitti; the symbol is a collective one and he is responsible/partially responsible/ or not responsible for the grafitti. Or maybe that isn’t really his arm. Who knows?

Or Danny’s tat could be just art that he really appreciates? It may have contributed to him getting a hottie ;-)

    Let me ask Danny ;-)

  3. Dylan says:

I think your guess fits under my collective symbol with grafitti that he is not responsible for. Once you get a tat of something, I think it becomes a personal symbol even though he may not hold the copyright or have created it.
My money is that he is a proud vandal.

As much as I’d like to keep ya’ll guessing, Dylan’s right: that Ribity tattoo isn’t really on my arm.

    It’s on my leg.

And from what I hear, Ribity’s in a good lot of trouble with the city of San Francisco, having caused tens of thousands of USD worth of damage to public and private property, and some of his “artistic installations” have pissed off private citizens so badly that there’s a group of them dedicated to selectively buffing his artwork as soon as it’s noticed. That’s a notoriety that few, if any, other artists (at least in SF) can claim.

If I were Ribity, the last thing I’d want to do is attract a lynch mob by getting a tattoo of my public insignia.

But it sure as hell did help me get a hottie! ;-)

Ribity’s notoriety aside, I have to confess that Danny & I are big fans… :)

In Toronto, there are a number of black and white Val Kilmer faces stuck around town. It cracks me up.

Someone also has sprayed stencils of various famous Bill faces on walls that say, “Post No Bills.”

There is an interesting SF graffiti film: “Piece by Piece” playing Thursday, December 8, 2005 – Monday, December 12, 2005 that Julia and I were thinking of checking out before this discussion, and now we are even more interested.

If you don’t already have plans tonight, I highly recommend Ben Morgan’s a href=”http://www.google.com/search?q=quality of life film”>Quality of Life, which has been enjoying an extended, but limited, run at a few theaters in SF. Its last scheduled showing is tonight at 9:15pm at the Roxie in the Mission.

Ben Morgan’s a really great guy who I’ve had the wonderful pleasure of meeting. He’s been working with kids in the juvenile justice system for quite some time, and he has a uniquely intelligent perspective on the streetart scene and the way that society handles the situation. He’s been generous in his involvement in discussions and debates on the subject, most recently participating in an SF Commonwealth Club panel discussion, as well as on KQED’s Forum – the podcast for that is still available from KQED, and there’s a streaming version available online as well.

QoL’s run may be extended again, but tonight also might be your last chance to catch it in theaters.

And of course, I will be at the Red Vic for the Piece by Piece showing. Hope to see you there.

Last night I missed checking out dorkbot-sf meetup because I was given tickets yesterday to Gwen Stefani tonight, and Flock owns the rest of my time. I am overwhelmed by how welcoming you and so many others are to us!

Danny & I are planning on going to Piece by Piece opening night — Thursday, probably for the later (9:15pm) showing. Come join us if you two are free that evening. :) There are several good places for dining in that part of the upper Haight.

  11. Julia says:

Thanks for the awesome invite. We could met at 7:30 or 7:45pm, but unfortunately nothing earlier as I have an appointment at 6pm this Thursday (dec 8th). Alternatively, if that is too rushed before the show, we could find a better night… whatever works for you two. Let us know what you think ;-) Looking forward to meeting yous :-)
